A community service team from the Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB) has chosen Wonotoro Village in Probolinggo Regency, East Java, as a pilot location for implementing the low-carbon tourism concept. This effort simultaneously aims to raise public awareness about the importance of sustainable tourism.
The initiative, which took place from August 30 to September 1, 2025, was titled “Low Carbon Tourism: Development of Low-Carbon Tourism in the Mount Bromo Area.” Wonotoro Village was selected as the pilot location due to its position as one of the main gateways to the Mount Bromo tourism area.
Wonotoro Village’s strategic position is considered vital as a tourism buffer village. According to the ITB team, the challenges faced by the village include preserving the environment amidst increasing tourist visits.
The ITB team was led by Susanna from the Applied and Environmental Oceanography Research Group, with members including Andri Hernandi from the Spatial Systems and Cadastre Research Group, and Iwan Pramesti Anwar from the Applied and Environmental Oceanography Research Group. These faculty members also involved students from the Faculty of Earth Sciences and Technology.
The team initially began their activities with a survey on May 30, 2025, to map out potential locations for instrument installation, covering tree-planting areas, fog harvesting equipment points, solar-powered lights, charger stations, and waste management facilities. “Based on the survey results, the Wonotoro Village Head’s office was designated as the primary installation site,” Susanna stated on the ITB website on Friday, November 7, 2025.
During the main implementation phase, the team re-checked the instruments and installed eco-friendly facilities. The activities continued with the planting of 100 trees involving the local community as a symbol of commitment to reforestation and strengthening the low-carbon tourism concept.
The program concluded with the inauguration of various facilities, such as solar panel lights, solar-powered charger station packages, and fog-harvesting tools, which are expected to assist the community in maintaining energy and environmental sustainability.
In addition to support from the village government, the implementation of this program also received logistical and field facility assistance from Hotel Jiwa Jawa Bromo, which shares a commitment to developing sustainable tourism in the Tengger region. The presence of this private sector entity strengthens the synergy between academics, the community, and tourism stakeholders in driving the practical implementation of the low-carbon tourism concept.
