PROBOLINGGO, itb.ac.id โ A team of lecturers and students from the Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB) carried out a Community Service (Pengmas) program in Wonotoro Village, Probolinggo Regency, from August 30 to September 1, 2025. Titled โLow Carbon Tourism: Development of Low-Carbon Tourism in the Mount Bromo Area,โ this initiative aims to foster sustainable tourism village development while supporting climate change mitigation efforts through the implementation of a low-carbon tourism concept.
Wonotoro Village serves as one of the main gateways to the Mount Bromo tourist destination. This strategic position makes it a vital buffer village for tourism, while also presenting challenges in preserving environmental sustainability amid rising tourist visits. This potential formed the basis for selecting the program location, aligning with ITB’s efforts to promote sustainable low-carbon tourism.
The program was led by Dr. Susanna, S.Si., M.T. (Research Group in Environmental and Applied Oceanography) with members Dr. Andri Hernandi (Research Group in Spatial Systems and Cadastre), and Dr. Iwan Pramesti Anwar, S.Si., M.Si. (Research Group in Environmental and Applied Oceanography). The activity also involved students from FITB ITB as part of project-based learning implementation and multidisciplinary collaboration.
The series of activities began with an initial survey on May 30, 2025, to map potential locations for instrument installation, including tree planting areas, fog harvesting tool points, solar-powered lights, charger stations, and waste management bins. Based on the survey results, the Wonotoro Village Head Office was designated as the primary installation site.

During the main implementation, the team re-checked the instruments and installed the eco-friendly facilities. This was followed by planting 100 trees involving the local community as a symbol of commitment to greening and strengthening the low-carbon tourism concept. The program then concluded with the inauguration of various facilities such as solar panel lights, solar-powered charger station packages, and fog catchers, which are expected to help the community maintain energy and environmental sustainability.
This activity received full support from the Wonotoro Village Government. The Village Head expressed appreciation for ITB’s contribution in supporting the development of the tourism village.
โWe are greatly assisted by these facilities and hope they can continue to be utilized to support Wonotoro Tourism Village,โ he stated.
In addition to support from the village government, the execution of this program also received logistical and field facility assistance from Hotel Jiwa Jawa Bromo, which is equally committed to sustainable tourism development in the Tengger region. The presence of this private sector entity strengthens the synergy between academics, the community, and tourism stakeholders in driving the practical implementation of the low-carbon tourism concept.

Through this program, the team hopes that Wonotoro Village can serve as a model for the applicable implementation of the low-carbon tourism concept, while raising public awareness of the importance of sustainable tourism. The collaboration between academics, the village government, and the community is expected to build a long-term foundation for greener and more carbon-friendly environmental development.
