Amidst the biting mountain chill, jazz singer Andien managed to create a warm atmosphere for the audience of Jazz Gunung Ijen late at night on Saturday, September 22, 2018. The audience was invited to sing and dance along to eight songs performed by her. Waves of emotion and joy alternated as Andien sang classic tunes as well as her latest single.
Tracks such as “Gemintang,” “Milikmu Selalu,” “Rindu Ini,” and “Indahnya Dunia” were delivered charmingly by Andien. Spontaneous excitement filled the air when Andien stepped down into the seating rows to invite the audience to hum and sing along together. “It is such a joy to perform at Jazz Gunung Ijen. This is an opportunity I have been waiting for a long time,” said Andien, who also performed energetically that night despite wearing a long gown.
For Andien, this second visit to Banyuwangi also felt special as it brought back nostalgic memories of her honeymoon in the City of The Sunrise of Java. “It is wonderful to be back in Banyuwangi. Back when we honeymooned at Mount Ijen, our destinations also included several places around Banyuwangi,” Andien said.
This year’s Jazz Gunung Ijen festival truly felt special. The jazz venue took place in the amphitheater area of the Gandrung Terracotta Park at Jiwa Jawa Resort. This amphitheater offers a backdrop of terraced rice fields dotted with hundreds of Gandrung dancer statues—Banyuwangi’s signature dance—scattered across the fields at an altitude of 600 meters above sea level (masl).
“I used to think I had visited many places in Banyuwangi. But coming to this place makes me feel like I haven’t seen anything yet in this city. It is truly breathtaking,” said Andien, who came with her husband and son. Andien admitted that she had heard a lot beforehand about the music event, which was being held for the third time.
“As soon as I got the offer to perform, I immediately agreed because I could already feel the vibe and imagine what the atmosphere would be like. So I didn’t have to think twice,” she stated.
As the grand finale act and the most anticipated performer by the millennial audience that night, Andien successfully satisfied her fans.
Aside from Andien, the lineup also featured Shadow Puppets feat. Marcell Siahaan, as well as senior jazz musicians Mus Mujiono and Idang Rasjidi. Shadow Puppets and Marcell performed a series of classic hits, including “Nonton Bioskop,” originally popularized by Bing Slamet, rearranged in a delightful jazz style. They also performed Marcell’s new song and his major hits like “Semusim” and “Jangan Pernah Berubah.” “I have to fight the Ijen cold with lively movements to warm up the atmosphere,” remarked Marcell, who delivered an engaging and dynamic performance.
