MSME Batik and Culinary Artisans Brighten Jazz Gunung Bromo 2023

Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) flocked to take part in enlivening the Jazz Gunung Bromo event held in Bromo, Probolinggo, East Java.

Jazz Gunung Bromo Founder Sigit Pramono stated that this year they are presenting the Batik Market, featuring batik artisans from various regions, one of which is Rifaiyah Batik from Batang Regency, Central Java.

Rifaiyah Batik is among the most sought-after. It is named Rifaiyah Batik because the artisans are students of Shaykh Ahmad Rifai, a prominent cleric and Indonesian national hero originating from Central Java.

More than just selling, the Batik Market also emphasizes education on the batik-making process as part of the archipelago’s cultural heritage that must be preserved.

“We invited batik artisans from Probolinggo, Banyuwangi, Batang, and several other regions. Because this is the first time, there aren’t many yet, but next year it can be even bigger. In the future, it might even become a separate event called the Bromo Batik Market,” Sigit said during his visit to the Batik Market on Saturday (July 22, 2023).

Mela Dewanti, owner of Mysoenbatik, a batik producer from Banyuwangi, felt fortunate to be able to showcase her work at the Bromo Batik Market.

“Here we have the Batik Market, and we are heavily supported in this event. I hope to be present at upcoming events, so the public knows that Banyuwangi has 50 batik motifs,” she said.

Her crafted batik is sold in various types and using different techniques, such as stamped, gradient, embroidered, and hand-drawn batik. Prices range from IDR 300 thousand to IDR 2 million, depending on the motif and the complexity of the craftsmanship.

Aside from batik, quite a number of MSMEs are also offering typical Bromo foods and souvenirs, involving local Bromo residents. Sigit hopes that the 2023 Jazz Gunung event will be able to boost economic turnover for micro-entrepreneurs, including the surrounding community.
