Terracotta Gandrung Park, managed by Jiwa Jawa Resort on the slopes of Mount Ijen, Banyuwangi, has emerged as Banyuwangi’s newest tourist destination. Sigit Pramono, the owner of Jiwa Jawa Resort and the initiator of Terracotta Gandrung Park, stated that this site serves as an antithesis to Garuda Wisnu Kencana in Bali. “We did not build a massive and imposing monument, but rather small, delicate, yet grounded statues,” he said on Saturday (22/9/2018).
Terracotta Gandrung Park is designed as an exhibition space featuring 1,000 terracotta gandrung statues. These statues are handcrafted by pottery artisans in Kasongan, Bantul, Special Region of Yogyakarta. Currently, the construction process is only about 40 percent complete. Sigit has not set a specific target for when the full count of 1,000 statues will be reached.
“We appreciate the initiative of Sigit Pramono as the owner of Jiwa Jawa, who also cares deeply about the preservation of the Gandrung culture as Banyuwangi’s traditional dance. Hopefully, this location will serve both as a tourist destination, a means of cultural preservation, and an educational facility for the youth,” said the Regent of Banyuwangi, Abdullah Azwar Anas.
