Gandrung Dance is the indigenous dance of the easternmost regency on the island of Java. Before becoming a Gandrung dancer, artists must undergo the Meras Gandrung initiation ceremony.
The Meras Gandrung ceremony, presented as an art and cultural attraction, is a key part of Banyuwangi’s tourism appeal. Early this year, the Meras Gandrung Dance Drama performance was held at the Gandrung Terracotta Park (TGT), Licin District, on Saturday (20/1/2024).
The Meras Gandrung Dance Drama is a colossal performance depicting the struggle and journey of a dancer overcoming challenges and tests to be officially graduated as a Gandrung dancer. The performance is all the more iconic because it is staged at Gandrung Terracotta Park.
This destination features a panorama of hundreds of Gandrung dancer statues set amidst a three-hectare productive rice terrace on the slopes of Mount Ijen. Performed by Gandrung dancers ranging from children to adults, this dance drama takes place in an amphitheater within the TGT area.
Head of the Banyuwangi Culture and Tourism Office, Muhammad Yanuarto Bramuda, stated that the Meras Gandrung performances at TGT have consistently been a sought-after tourist attraction. This attraction complements the tourism appeal of the Mount Ijen region, which is famous for its Blue Fire.
“It is truly a fascinating experience to witness a cultural heritage art performance. Visitors can also enjoy the scenic beauty of terraced rice fields with terracotta statues of Gandrung dancers as a breathtaking backdrop. Furthermore, tourists can savor archipelago culinary delights and authentic Banyuwangi coffee,” said Bramuda.
Ridho, Program Manager of “Seni Netra” at Gandrung Terracotta Park, added that the Meras Gandrung Dance Drama performance is part of a series of scheduled arts and cultural events for 2024.
This event not only promotes rich traditional arts but also contributes positively to the economic development of the local community. Throughout January, February, and March, the Meras Gandrung Dance Drama performances are free for TGT visitors.
“We strive to involve the community as performers so that they can actively participate in arts and cultural activities. This step is expected to economically empower the local community while making them active participants in cultural arts,” Ridho stated.
