Tumpang Sari Pendopo

The Distinctive Characteristic of the Joglo Roof Frame

Architecture

A Symbol of the Joglo Owner's Status

Tumpang sari is the core construction element and defining characteristic of the Pendopo roof frame. This framework consists of the 'brunjung' roof structure arrangement (an inverted pyramidal shape that widens progressively toward the top, paired with the 'uleg' framework structure positioned in tiers above the four main 'soko guru' pillars) as well as the 'uleng' framework arrangement (a pyramidal roof structure arranged above the four 'soko guru' pillars pointing inward).

The number of carved tumpang sari layers depends on the owner's preference. Tumpang symbolizes the social status or rank of the Joglo owner. A greater number of tumpang sari layers indicates a higher social standing or wealth.

The tumpang sari, or tiered beam arrangement on a Joglo building, must total an odd number ranging from 3, 5, 9 to 11 tiers. This pendopo features 11 inner tumpang sari layers and 3 outer tumpang sari layers.
