Hundreds of Terracottas Amidst the Rice Fields
Pelataran Gandrung is nestled within the rice fields. Hundreds of terracotta sculptures taking the form of Gandrung dancers, chickens, and traditional Javanese ablution vessels (padasan) are neatly arranged to tell a story. Created through lower-temperature firing (below or a maximum of 1000°C), the terracottas possess a more fragile nature, making them susceptible to impact, easily cracked, or even broken. They will eventually return to the earth.
This fragile quality reminds us all that nothing in this life is permanent. From earth, back to earth. Much like cultural practices, terracotta is not meant to create permanent or eternal forms. Because what is eternal is the process, the meaning, and the values embedded within it.
