A Reflection of Owahing Jaman
The water buffalo, locally known as 'kebo' in Javanese, is deeply woven into the tradition and culture of Banyuwangi. It symbolizes the cooperative relationship between farmers and plowing animals, which historically helped farmers cultivate and enrich the soil.
This buffalo sculpture series is presented sequentially, depicting forms ranging from an intact buffalo figure to one partially submerged in the earth.
This artwork serves as a critical reflection on modern progress that displaces local wisdomβan embodiment of 'owahing jaman', the changing of times. Additionally, a local village still frequently performs the traditional 'kebo-keboan' ritual in agricultural fields, specifically in Krajan Hamlet, Alasmalang Village, Singojuruh District, Banyuwangi (located 33 km from TGT).
